Special Education Degree
With a special education degree, you will have the opportunity to teach children with special needs. These children have disabilities of a physical and/or mental nature, and they require an instructor with specialized skills who can teach them what they need to know in a way that they can understand. - Associate of Arts in Special Education: To start your career as a special education teacher, you will need to have the basic skills that an Associate Degree will provide for you. It is a two-year program that will have you ready to teach when you graduate.
- Bachelor of Arts in Special Education: A Bachelor of Arts Degree will further your knowledge in the field of special education. You will learn the necessary skills to teach special children who have mild to moderate disabilities. You will be instructed in teaching practices, foundations of special education and teaching, and management practices. You will also have the opportunity to participate in practice teaching sessions.
- Master of Arts in Special Education: If you desire to advance your career and specialize in this field, a Master of Arts Degree should be your goal. You will learn on an advanced level and will have skills in leadership when you graduate with this degree. Instruction on teaching children with disabilities from mild through severe will be a part of this course, and the curriculum will include focus on physical and mental impairments, handling specific learning disabilities and mobility issues outside of the school environment.
- Doctorate in Special Education: If you want to acquire the highest degree in special education, you will then want to obtain your Doctorate. With a degree of this level, you can become a special educator in a leadership role. You will receive instruction on teaching young children and young adults with mild, moderate and severe disabilities, including visual impairments. A Doctorate will give you the skills to acquire a special educator position where you can make a big difference in the lives of children with special needs.
The degree level you desire will depend on how focused you are and how far you hope to go in your chosen area of special education. You can teach special needs children with an Associate Degree, but the higher of a degree you attain, the higher of a position you will be able to acquire. If you want to be a leader in the field of special education, you will want to get a Bachelor or Master’s Degree, with a Doctorate giving you the ultimate in leadership skills.
