General Education Degree
Choosing a major can be an extremely daunting task for many individuals. The reasons for this are twofold: 1. they fear committing to a major they will later regret; 2. they do not want to feel pressured to choose a major immediately. When attempting to select a field of study, some individuals simply find it difficult to narrow their focus to one particular area. Individuals sometimes prefer for their program of study to be broad and encompass a variety of areas, including history, science, and politics to name a few. For those individuals that desire to enroll in a broad-based degree program that will offer them all of the basics of a typical college education, a general education degree may be right for them. A degree in general education is often referred to as a generalist degree. A program of this type may offer students a number of benefits and advantages.

With a degree in general education, individuals will learn to strengthen and improve both their study habits and their learning skills. In addition, the practical information provided to individuals during this course of this study can be used in day-to-day life. A degree in general education will help individuals become proficient and accomplished in a variety of subject areas. Individuals participating in a general education program may engage in coursework in the following subjects:
- English Composition
- General Psychology
- Public Speaking
Others areas in which individuals of general education degree programs may be exposed include: earth science, personal health and wellness, art history, music appreciation, and geography. While a degree in general education will not prepare an individual for any one particular field of employment, this degree is indicative an individual’s willingness to be trained in various subject areas. A degree such as this may also indicate the individual’s ability to be flexible in various economic environments. These traits are usually of great value to potential employers.
Available Degrees in General Education
Individuals desiring to obtain a degree in general education may choose to pursue an associate’s, bachelors, or master’s degree in general education. The amount of time required to obtain each of these degrees will vary, and individuals should choose a degree level based on their interests and career aspirations.
- Associate’s Degree – individuals may choose between the Associate of Art in General Studies and the Associate of Science in General Studies. Each of these degree programs would take approximately two years for an individual to complete.
- Bachelor’s Degree – individuals may choose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in General Studies if they so desire. With most bachelor degree programs, it will take students four years to earn this degree.
- Master’s Degree – individuals that wish to further their education may choose to pursue a Master’s Degree in General Studies. Individuals that have already earned their four-year degree may choose to earn their master’s degree. It usually takes individuals between two and three years to earn a master’s degree.
