Distance Learning PhD
The PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is the highest degree an individual can earn in the United States’ system of education. Individuals who earn a PhD are considered experts in their particular field of study and have undergone extensive training, examination, and research to earn that respect. As the technology of the 21st century continues to change our way of life, more and more individuals can earn their doctoral degree through a distance learning PhD program. Technology has now made it possible to accomplish a distance learning PhD in almost any field at the doctoral level except for medical professions.
A distance learning PhD program does not differ in principle from that of a traditional PhD program offered by on campus programs. Students will spend four to six years in pursuit of their distance learning PhD, much like students attending on campus programs at a traditional university or college. Students are expected to complete coursework in the early stages of their PhD before transitioning to a more research oriented stage of their education. In the end, just like with traditional PhD programs, distance learning PhD programs require a student to prepare and defend a written dissertation in order to graduate.
Distance learning PhD opportunities are almost limitless, again with the exception of any medical programs. Students can earn some of the following specialized PhDs just as easily online as they can in the classroom at a university or college:
- Psychology: a Ph.D. in Psychology or Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D)
- Business: a Ph.D. in Business or a Doctor of Business Administration
- Education
- Engineering
- Public Health
When deciding upon a distance learning PhD individuals should take their time to match up different programs with their needs. Distance learning PhD programs require internet and computer proficiency, making that the first and most important consideration for those contemplating a distance learning PhD. Other things to consider include:
- Financing
- Schedule availability
- Time commitment to devote to studying and research
- Professional affiliations available
- Licensure requirements for their field of study
- Accreditation and recognition by both national and global agencies
- Mentoring options and the assignment process
