The arrival of online education has brought a huge advantage to those individuals with little free time. Whether it is due to work or parental care, to those who live far from universities, and to those who want to get a particular degree but cannot travel to the universities that offer it, online campuses offer a wide range of benefits for prospective students. By being able to earn a degree online, people no longer need to be stuck in their intellectual growth and educational achievement because of life’s responsibilities or circumstances which prevent them from attending on-campus college classes.

Online degrees have risen to prominence with the widespread use of Internet capable devices, and they are now offered through multiple universities in numerous fields and at all levels, from an associate’s degree to a PhD. Online degrees can be based at a traditional university, college with a physical campus, or they can be offered from a school based entirely online. As is typical with a new wave of change, the debate regarding whether or not online education is as good as traditional on-campus education is ongoing. When determining whether you want to pursue a degree on-campus or online, it is important to be aware of the differences and how they can affect your academic success. Always remember to filter the opinions of others through your own needs and desires when researching online schools and other options. While there is the opinion that students lose out on certain educational elements by enrolling in online degree programs, online schools may be your only option, and these opinions should not discourage you from becoming educated and achieving a college degree.

When considering online education options, be certain the programs under consideration are properly accredited. As with all things on the Internet, it is very easy to make a webpage and you will likely find schools that are either fake or not accredited. By choosing an accredited program, it becomes very likely that you will receive the same level of education as a student who attends class on-campus.

However, there are several additional considerations that take part in forming a decision to enroll in an on-campus or online schools. Only the student can make this decision for himself or herself based on his or her needs. To help you decide, here is a list of the primary differences between the two formats that you should be aware of when selecting a degree program.

Access — This consideration regards whether or not you can get to a traditional campus, and the proximity of the particular campus that offers the degree program you really want.

  • Online School: Best for students looking at a long commute to the nearest university or if they are not able to move to the University of their Choice.
  • On-Campus: If getting to campus is not an issue, attending the university’s physical location can bring additional benefits, such as internships and work opportunities that are only available on-campus. Also, in terms of tuition, it may be fiscally better to attend a close in-state school with in-state tuition, than enroll in an out-of-state online program with much higher tuition rates.

Learning styles – This consideration regards the situations or materials in which or with which you learn the best. It also has to do with your ability to study and complete work independently.

  • Online School: For students comfortable working independently and completing work by deadlines (which may or may not be flexible) of which they must remind themselves. Also, successful students need to be able to budget or make time around other responsibilities and commitments for the completion of schoolwork. Online education is best for visual learners.
  • On-Campus: For students who need the structure and discipline of a physical classroom and a specific time of day in order to be successful. Also for students who thrive when learning in groups and when receiving in-person attention from the professor.
