Education-Based Tax benefits on College ExpensesIt is a fact that college education is expensive. However, you can take advantage of the IRS provided tax benefits for the expensive college education for yourself or your dependents. The tax benefits fall in three different categories, viz. the tuition and fees tax deduction, the Hope Credit and Life time Learning Credit. You are allowed to deduct, at least a part of, the specified higher education expenses you have paid during the year. The specified expense includes the tuition and fees paid for taking a degree or certificate program at a recognized post-secondary educational institution. The maximum deduction allowed is $4,000 or $2,000, depending on your MAGI (modified adjusted gross income). The Hope Credit is available for college students, but only for the first two years of college education. The Hope Credit can be claimed up to $1,800 on the first $2,400 of tuition and fees and can be claimed if you, your spouse or dependent, are studying the first or second year in an accredited college. Further your enrollment should have been for at least half-time during the year. The Lifetime Learning Credit is available for taking college classes by you, your spouse or dependent, in an accredited educational institution. The tax credit is up to $2,000 on the first $10,000 of tuition and fees. Even if you have taken only just one class, unlike the Hope credit requirement of attending class half-time, you can take advantage of the Lifetime Learning Credit. Student loan interest up to $2,500 is also eligible for deduction from your income, depending on the specified income limits. For individuals in 2007, full deduction was permitted for MAGI up to $55,000 and partial deduction for MAGI between $55,000 and $70,000. Both the Hope Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit cannot be claimed together for the same student in the same year. However, one of these credits and student loan interest deduction can be availed simultaneously. Scholarships and fellowships, in general, are tax free if you are a student at an eligible educational institution and the scholarship/fellowship amount is used to pay qualified education expenses (tuition, fees, books, supplies and course-related equipment). Under the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program or Armed Forces health Professions Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program, funds received for teaching, research and other services are not taxable. Other programs of tax benefits are the Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) (allowing contribution up to $2,000 per year by qualified taxpayer), Qualified Tuition Programs (OTPs), 529 plans (allowing prepayment to a tuition savings account for the beneficiary) and Education Savings Bond program. Education IRA withdrawals and educational assistance (tuition reimbursement) from an employer would also qualify for receiving tax credits. |
