In order to gain entry to a mechanical engineering program at the university level a student will have needed to complete two years of algebra as well as geometry and trigonometry.

Once they reach the university level students can expect to be inundated with more advanced mathematics courses such as calculus, as well as chemistry and physics. Mechanical engineering degree programs in the United States are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. As of 2006 the ABET recognizes 276 mechanical engineering degree programs in the U.S. The varying levels of education available affect how high an individual can reach in their field. Bachelor’s degrees are considered the bare minimum while a Master’s Degree or Engineering Degree (a professional degree considered intermediate between a Master’s and Doctorate) open more doors and increase salaries. A Doctorate is considered the standard for those wishing to teach mechanical engineering.
