Forensic Psychology Degree

If you are interested in acquiring a forensic psychology degree, you will be assured of having a career that will not be like any other. A forensic psychologist can work in a number of different areas of criminal law, counseling inmates, defendants, and victims of crime and their families. With a forensic psychology degree, you may work closely with lawyers on criminal cases. It will be your job responsibility to handle the mental health issues of those involved with crime, whether it is the person who committed the crime or the innocent victim of a crime.

Family law may also be involved with a forensic psychologist’s duties. If you have a forensic psychology degree, you may find yourself working with custody battles, child abuse cases, child visitation disputes and divorce issues. For this career, you will need to be very familiar with the criminal justice system and psychology, as both are combined in the field of forensic psychology. It will take very intensive training on your part to get the proper education, and a doctoral degree may be your choice for succeeding in this field. Your studies may take you seven years of hard work to complete, but they will be seven years of worthwhile effort when you obtain a rewarding career as a forensic psychologist.

• Associate’s Degree: You will be learning about both the criminal justice system and forensic psychology. You will learn about theories and the type of psychology that is used in legal policies. You will also be required to learn about the fundamentals of law enforcement. Your coursework may include criminology, forensic psychology, juvenile law, Homeland Security, terrorism and the legalities of law enforcement.
• Bachelor of Science Degree: This program will take you farther along the path to a complete education in forensic psychology. Your coursework in obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree may include Quantitative Analysis, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Criminal Procedure, Forensic Anthropology, Bio-statistics and Organic Chemistry.
• Master of Arts Degree: You will be taking yet another important step in your education with a Master’s Degree. With the training you will receive in this program, you may decide to go on to obtain your Doctorate, which will give you the best chance of acquiring rewarding work as a forensic psychologist. Or you could stop with this degree and still be able to obtain good work that would have a starting salary of approximately $35,000 a year.
• Doctorate in Forensic Psychology: This is as high as you can go in your education. With this degree, you will have all of the necessary qualifications to become a licensed forensic psychologist. By the time you have reached this level in your education, you will be very familiar with the various aspects of law and psychology. Now comes the time when you will really put the two together and, upon graduation, find rewarding work in the field of forensic psychology.
