Distance Learning Degree Programs gain National Recognition

Friday, December 26th, 2008

For the first time in three years, an educational organization in the United States has been awarded the coveted Baldridge Award. Three different organizations received this award in 2008, and the North Carolina Iredell Statesville School District (I-SS) was among them. The other two organizations that were so honored including a healthcare business and a food industry giant.

The Baldridge Award was developed in 1987. It is given with the intent to honor service and performance excellence, as well as strategic planning and effective implementation, especially with regard to quality control and improvement. This award is designed to recognize the achievement of organizations that have made a serious commitment to quality and productivity.

School Superintendent Holliday believed that the school district’s commitment to distance learning made the organization stand out among the 88 other applicants. I-SS offers distance learning programs for secondary school students throughout the state of North Carolina. In the school’s first year, approximately 500 students participated in this distance degree program, while approximately 1000 students are enrolled in 2008.

Distance Learning Degree Programs: Knowing the Lingo

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

The increasing popularity of distance degrees has resulted in the creation of many new words. Both learners and educators have coined new terms to communicate new concepts and ideas that are completely unique to online degree programs. How well can you speak the distance learning lingo?

Are you familiar with audiographics? This is an audio technology that utilizes phone lines to relay information contained in graphs and charts. Of course, you’ll need a line that can deliver information at a high enough rate of bauds per second to do this. (The standard dial-up modem offers about 56,000 bauds per second.)

Compressed video can also be sent over a phone line; unnecessary information is removed so that the information is transmitted more quickly. Don’t be surprised, though, if you experience lag while watching. (Lag is the time delay that often occurs when these images are being transmitted, making it look as though people in the video are stuttering or taking long pauses between words.)

Even if your online degree program doesn’t involve computer science or networking, you probably are familiar with the Internet and your modem, but you may not be aware that many modern machines operate through mechatronics. (This is the use of software and computer hardware to control a machine’s mechanical functions.)

Other terms you may encounter while working to earn a degree online include twinning, parallel-time coop, or audioconferencing. Does your online degree university use other terms to explain concepts used in its distance education degree program? Share them with our readers today!

Male and Female Differences in Distance Learning

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Recent research has shown that women are more likely than men to enroll in distance degree education programs. This is especially true for mature women going back to school, as well as minority women and those with low incomes. The convenience and flexibility of these online degree programs has offered this group of people a chance to complete a college degree program and succeed in their careers.

Distance learning is becoming ever more popular. in 2006, the number of people who were enrolled in a distance education degree program was approximately 3.5 million. This represented an increase of almost 20 percent from 2002 figures. Furthermore, studies indicate that this number continues to grow significantly each year.

More women than men are enrolled in online degree universities. This may be because women often tend to need the increased schedule flexibility offered by these degree programs. Taking online degree courses rather than enrolling in a traditional college degree program can often mean significant savings in terms of time, commute expenses, and childcare costs, all of which are important to single parents and low income families.

Distance learning offers a wide variety of career opportunities to students, and allows individuals to choose among certificate programs, associate degrees. Students can even earn a bachelor degree online, or finish master degree programs. Don’t let the opportunity to finish your degree get away - learn more about online university degree programs today!
