Military Personnel Turn to Online Degree Programs
When the Iraq war began, thousands of college students left their educational dreams behind them and answered the call to serve. Some students were already members of the armed services, belonging to the Reserve branch of the Army, Navy, or Air Force. Others enlisted and joined their friends as comrades in arms. They left behind fraternity parties and sorority pledges. Many relinquished valuable scholarship opportunities, but others were able to use theirs for on line degrees.
Many military people have been able to complete college degrees while stationed overseas. In addition, they have been able to advance in their military career by enrolling in military online universities such as American Military University. Other service personnel who plan one day to return to civilian life and continue to pursue their career goals have successfully completed business degrees, accounting degrees, and even computer science degrees.
Branches of the armed services saw the benefit of distance learning degrees decades ago. For example, 20 years ago, military men and women were completing continuing education, as well as requirements for advancement in rank, through correspondence courses. This trend continues, and many are now able to complete entire military online courses and obtain military online degrees.
Military professionals enrolled in distance learning courses can now receive accredited degrees from reputable universities even while they serve. Gone are the days when military personnel return home woefully under-equipped for civilian life. Now, they have an opportunity to be served by American colleges and universities - even as they serve their country!
