The Importance of a Graphic Design Degree
Individuals that are artistically gifted and have a talent for sketching, creating, and designing may wonder if they should pursue a graphic design degree. They may feel they have all of the talent and knowledge they need to enter the world of graphic design without any secondary education. Even though individuals may be talented artists and possess creativity, they may not be fully equipped to enter the field of graphic design. A career in graphic design is more than simply knowing how to operate various software or just being creative. In fact, graphic design encompasses things such as visual problem solving, understanding how to meet client’s needs, and knowing how to sell a product in a captivating, innovative way. A few rare individuals may inherently possess these important skills, but the majority of individuals will need to be taught and molded into graphic design professionals.
Types of Graphic Design Degrees
There are several types of graphic design degrees from which individuals may choose to further their career in graphic design. Three of the main degrees that an individual may pursue in graphic design are the Associate of Science in Graphic Design, the Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design, and the Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. An online graphic design degree can also be a great option for prospective students with busy schedules. Individuals who work full-time, have parental responsibilities, or simply want the flexibility of an online class can pursue an online graphic design degree.
Associate of Science in Graphic Design
An associate degree will provide individuals with a fundamental knowledge and understanding of graphic design. Essential aspects such as how to identify the target audience and how to create a design that will effectively communicate with that target audience. With this type of degree, the primary focus will usually be on design for print. However, some associate degree programs do include courses for web design as well.
Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design
A bachelor degree will be ideal for those individuals that desire to pursue a more advanced study in graphic design. This type of program will provide more comprehensive instruction for students in regard to software programs, effective design solutions, and portfolio creation. Web design and development will be an important focus of a bachelor degree program in addition to print design. By combining print and web design, bachelor degree students will be better prepared to begin a career in graphic design.
Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design
Students of graphic design may also wish to pursue higher level degrees in graphic design such as the Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. Master’s degree programs prepare students to use specific design software and other essential computer tools. Many graphic design principles are covered through Master’s degree coursework, and this advanced program will help students integrate both graphic technologies and core design skills.
